Both fighters display gaunt fight-week appearances, raising major concerns ahead of the 147-pound limit weigh-in.
The build-up to the WBC welterweight title bout between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn has shifted from technical analysis to survival of the weight cut. While Conor Benn’s tough road back down to 147 pounds was widely expected following his middleweight run against Chris Eubank Jr., Ryan Garcia’s severely drawn and gaunt appearance during fight week caught the boxing community completely off-guard.
Footage and photos from initial media appearances showed Garcia featuring sunken cheeks and an unusually frail look, drawing sharp reactions across social media. While some observers argued Garcia was simply exceedingly lean, others drew uncomfortable parallels to his days at 135 pounds. Garcia’s weight-cutting history adds fuel to the fire; he notably missed weight by over three pounds for his 2024 bout against Devin Haney, a contest later overturned to a no-contest following a failed drug test.
Meanwhile, Benn faces his own physical crisis. Having scaled down only to 150 pounds for his fight against Regis Prograis, shedding the final three pounds has pushed his body to the absolute limit. As both men approach the scales, the physical toll of reaching the welterweight cap suggests that regardless of the winner, 147 pounds might no longer be a sustainable home for either fighter.
