Alistair Overeem is ramping up his efforts to secure a massive Dutch super-fight against Rico Verhoeven.
Despite years of near-misses and two canceled bouts, Overeem believes the timing is finally right—especially following Verhoeven’s high-profile boxing match against Oleksandr Usyk in Egypt, which Overeem watched live from ringside. Backed by promoters offering a lucrative purse, Overeem is targeting a showdown at the iconic 60,000-seat stadium in Amsterdam in 2027.
Speaking to Bloody Elbow, the former UFC champion noted that a boxing match gives Verhoeven his best shot, arguing that his own vast experience would make an MMA or kickboxing bout too one-sided. However, Overeem made it clear that if Verhoeven backs down, the world will know he is avoiding the fight.
Overeem issued a direct challenge to his rival:
“Rico, the fans want this, the Netherlands wants this, and I want this. We still have unsettled business. Let’s settle the score once and for all and decide who is number one in the Netherlands. Amsterdam Arena, 2027—I’m waiting for you, so let’s go.”
