Former world boxing champion Zolani Tete has been tragically killed in an attack near his home in Mdantsane, South Africa, reports SABC radio citing media.az.
The 38-year-old South African was returning from a training session and waiting for his gate to open when two armed men in balaclavas approached his vehicle and opened fire. Tete died at the scene. A female passenger sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is currently in critical condition at a local hospital.
During his professional career, Tete held the IBF junior bantamweight world title (2014–2015) and the WBO bantamweight belt (2017–2019). He also holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a world title fight, having stopped Siboniso Gonya in just 11 seconds in 2017. In recent months, the former champion was preparing to make his return to the ring following a suspension.
