Teofimo Lopez captured the WBA welterweight title in Las Vegas, securing a majority decision victory over Rolando “Rolly” Romero after a tactical performance at the T-Mobile Arena.
Lopez was the busier and more precise fighter throughout much of the contest, outworking the champion, who spent too long waiting for power-shot openings rather than forcing the action.
Drama in the Middle Rounds The challenger controlled the opening three rounds using volume and ring generalship before Romero finally found his range. In the fifth round, Romero landed a heavy right hand that visibly wobbled Lopez and opened a severe cut near his right eye.
Despite having the challenger in serious trouble, Romero failed to capitalized on his biggest moment. Lopez showed championship resilience, surviving the onslaught, adjusting his defense, and re-establishing his rhythm in the sixth.
Reclaiming Top Status at 147 Pounds As the fight progressed into the final rounds, Romero continued to operate defensively, failing to throw the necessary volume to overturn the deficit. Lopez maintained his composure, controlling the distance until the final bell.
The judges scored the fight 116-112 and 115-113 for Lopez, along with a 114-114 card, sealing the majority decision victory.
Just seven months after losing his WBO super lightweight title to Shakur Stevenson, Lopez has successfully made his mark in a third weight class, adding the WBA 147-pound belt to his previous lightweight and super lightweight titles. A frustrated Romero left the ring quickly and declined an extended post-fight interview with DAZN.
